Report on “Wealth not Waste” project by IWSA

On Saturday 9th March 2013, IWSA-Vashi felicitated Dr. Sharad Kale for his Padmashri Award winning work on “Nisarg-runa” “Debt to Nature”. He was honoured by Dr. Sudha Padhye, founder member of IWSA’s Board of Trustees.

The event also marked the launching of the Project “Wealth not Waste”. Speaking on this occasion Dr. Sudha Rao, the Vice-President of IWSA gave further insights about the Project. She explained that the project involves two components; first to create awareness about the isolation of dry & wet waste material in surrounding area and secondly to install a solid waste treatment Demo plant of“Nisargruna” at IWSA campus which will generate biogas fuel and manure from biodegradable
waste. This will process minimum 25kg kitchen waste or maximum 50kg. The design, fabrication and installation will be done by BARC under the guidance of Dr. Sharad Kale. The collection of waste will be done volunteers from the Stree Mukti Sanghathana. The project is funded by ‘Hemendra Kothari Foundation’.

She emphasized the need of spreading awareness about environment issues. What we generally refer to as Waste is actually the Resource for generating fuel. It is necessary to shift our focus to eco-friendly technologies. She informed that Eco friendly technologies such as rainwater harvesting and solar water heating systems have already been adopted at IWSA’s working women’s hostel -Vashi.
Ms Jyoti Mhapsekar founder and President of Stree Mukti Sanghatana showed a short film on the functioning of Nisargruna and explained how the functioning of the handlers of the Resources required for the running of the plant.

Padmashri Dr. Sharad Kale held the listeners spell bound with his work on “Nisargruna” and the need of returning back to nature what we get from it. He handed over Certificates to 12 students from Sainath School who has successfully completed the training, known as “Science Nurture” at IWSA’s Science Laboratory. It is expected to completion the plant by June, 2013

The program was attended by IWSA members, dignitaries from all walks of life, students of nearby school and IWSA’s friends and well-wishers.
